Chores For Children

Most parents would agree that it is a good idea to teach your children that all members of the family must do their share of the work needed to keep a household running. This can be done by setting chores for children and parents alike so that the whole family can see what jobs each person is doing. Many parents however find it hard to motivate their children to complete their chores but there are several things you can do to encourage them.

The first thing you should do is begin early. Young children love to help their parents and it worthwhile giving them simple chores that they can manage so that you can begin to form the right habits at an early age.

The second thing you need to do is to focus on one chore at a time. Don’t confuse your children, especially younger ones, by giving them too much to do. Start with one chore, show them how to do it, explain it carefully and break it down into smaller parts if necessary. You will most probably need to monitor them at first to make sure it is done correctly but over time they should be able to manage it on their own.

Another thing you should do is to set up a chore chart reward system. Having a visual reminder of their chores as well as a public display of how well they have been completing them can be a great help. It has been shown that praise for positive behaviour is more effective than criticism for bad behaviour, so don’t nag or scold your children into doing their chores. Instead offer a reward for a good attitude and a good effort and follow through with your promises in a timely manner.

These are a few things you can keep in mind when determining chores for children. It may take some time before you have a houseful of responsible and cheerful helpers but it is well worth the effort.
