Chore Charts For Kids
Making chore charts for kids can result in many benefits. It can help teach your children how to be responsible as well as providing some relief for busy parents in the up-keep of the home. Also, for parents with several children, having a chore chart can help keep squabbles and bickering to a minimum as everyone knows what is expected of them.
Making a chore chart sounds easy, but sometimes making an effective one that your kids are enthusiastic about using is not that simple. But, there are a few simple things you can do to help. It is important to remember that visualization is critical in the success of your chore chart. Whatever you do, do not just write out your child’s names and then list the chores beside them. This will muster little excitement and participation from your kids.
Younger children respond well to pictures that show what their chores are, rather than words. Also, if you have more than one child, assigning a particular color for each child will make it more interesting for them. Older children will prefer to mark off their own chores as they finish them, while you will probably need to help younger ones know when they have completed a particular chore.
An important decision you will need to make is whether there will be consequences for not completing a chore. I prefer to reward good behaviour, rather than punishing for bad behaviour, so offering a reward for a good attitude and effort is part of my system. This does not mean that a child should be rewarded for every little job that they do, but rather that every so often, perhaps once a week or month, you sit down and discuss with your child how they have been doing. A good effort means that they may get a special outing or privilege.
When making chore charts for kids, it is good to remember the main reason you are doing it. You want to develop good habits and a helpful attitude in your child and a chore chart is just one tool to help you do that.
