Age Appropriate Chores
Having your children perform chores is not just about the parents getting some much needed help around the house. Chores help your child learn how to be responsible as well as a productive member of the family. Finding age appropriate chores is very important however as you want your child to feel a sense of satisfaction at a job well done, without feeling overwhelmed.
One of the first things to consider is your child’s physical limitations. Things such as how much they can carry or how high they can reach will influence what you can reasonably expect them to do by themselves. If your child will be completing their chores without your supervision, try imagining what the worst thing could be that could possibly happen and plan your chores accordingly.
It is also worth considering your child’s schedule. When is the best time for them to complete their chores? Let’s face it, as parents we want our children to not only do their chores, but do them cheerfully. Working out a time when your child is most likely to be happy and willing to help can make a big difference for both of you. Perhaps early morning chores would be better than doing them after school or dinner.
If you take into consideration your child’s interests and hobbies you can transform an unhappy helper into an enthusiastic ally. Perhaps your child really likes the vacuum, or maybe they are really into animals and would love the chance to look after the family pet? If you can harness their interest you can direct their energies as well.
Assigning age appropriate chores will make a huge difference in how your children respond to the whole idea of helping around the house. It will help them develop a sense of responsibility and instil in them values that will benefit them throughout their whole lives.
